Hot Weather Safety Advice

Good morning residents,

As you may already be aware UKHSA have issued an amber alert for the current heatwave with temperatures expected of 30c and above for the upcoming weekend. Please ensure you are prepared and look after yourself, family and friends accordingly. The heatwave may encourage more people to attend our local beaches, outdoor parks or spend time in their own gardens.

The main risks posed by a heatwave are:

  • Not drinking enough water (dehydration)
  • Overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
  • Heat exhaustion and sun stroke/burn
  • Coastal/Beach/Water Safety Tips-

  • Tides- The tides follow a predictable pattern, check the tide times before you leave home. Cleethorpes Beach has a fast moving tidal range that varies massively in depth- Consider potential hazards too deep or too shallow, currents, tides or hidden underwater objects.
  • Mud/Quicksand- Cleethorpes beach can be dangerous, as people can get stuck and potentially drown due to rising tides or hidden channels. If you or someone else gets stuck, stay calm, spread your weight– never attempt a rescue yourself.
  • Carry a charged mobile phone- If you get in trouble at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Cleethorpes has a dedicated Coastguard and RNLI stations able to respond to an emergency using specialist rescue equipment.
  • Supervise Children- Ensure children are supervised and stay within sight to avoid being separated. The Sandi Starfish scheme is in place along the 3 mile stretch of the Cleethorpes coast there will be up to seven locations with tall flags displaying the distinct “Sandi Starfish” design printed on them. “Sandi Starfish” wristband can be obtained from different locations throughout the resort who will be displaying Sandi Starfish logos and posters. Important information can be written on the back of the wristband- consider an agreed safe place to meet up in case you get separated.

  • Water Safety- Think carefully about your ability to splash or swim in cold outdoor water. Are you really a good swimmer? Never use inflatables in open water– although they look fun, inflatable water toys can quickly get caught in the wind and be blown out to sea.

  • BBQ'S- Always keep a barbecue supervised, place it on a level surface away from flammable materials, and keep children and pets away from the cooking area. Have a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies and ensure the barbecue is completely cool before moving or disposing of it. In case of a fire call 999 immediately and ask for Fire Service.

  • Hot Weather Crime Prevention Advice Tips-

  • Vehicle/Caravan Crime- Never leave windows open or convertible roofs down when the car is unoccupied. Don't leave your doors unlocked when leaving the vehicle. Never leave the keys in the ignition when you are not driving the car or items on display. It's holiday season and unfortunately thefts of, or from, caravans do sometimes occur. Many caravan security devices are available on the market, from hitch locks to steady locks, from alarms to wheel-clamps.
  • Residential Burglary- Lock your house doors behind you, even if you're just out in the garden. Always close and lock windows when you're not in the same room or leave the house. Ensure no valuables are not left on display.  When tidying the garden don’t leave your tools outside when you are indoors or aren’t at home– lock them up securely.
  • Alcohol- Bars won’t serve anybody who is extremely intoxicated. You might be asked to leave, or they can lose their licence. If you’re out these summer nights, stick with your friends and family. Plan your travel home and only use licensed local taxi's or companies- on no occasion drink and drive.

  • Animals/Pets Safety- Should never be left unattended in a car on a warm or hot day, even for a short period, as cars can quickly heat up to dangerous and even fatal temperatures. Leaving windows open or providing water is not sufficient to prevent overheating and heatstroke. If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, contact the police or RSPCA immediately.

  • ASB- If you witness any ASB including nuisance motorbikes report this via 101 or online portal. If able gather any evidence of the offence to support police enforcement such as vehicle details, CCTV or photographs.

  • Your Haverstoe, Humberston & New Waltham local policing team will be on duty this weekend, please free to speak with us about any concerns or questions you may have. We will be around the area and also at events at Cleethorpes Country Park Run, 08:30-10:30 hours and Tesco, Cleethorpes, 13:00-14:00 hours on Saturday 21st June 2025.

    Thank you,

    Dan.
